Physics and Complexity, can we understand heterogeneous systems?

PLANARY SESSION

Tuesday 23rd of September

Abstract:

Statistical physics -as complex system's science- deals with emergent properties of large systems composed of interacting units. Traditional Stat-Phys problems are homogeneous with units of a few species and simple interactions. However, in modern statistical physics and by definition in complexity, heterogeneous systems assume an ever increasing importance. While heterogeneity does not pose a problem in simulations, it is in general a major obstacle to analytic comprehension of relevant models.  In this talk I will review recent progress in analytic approaches to heterogeneous systems. I will discuss examples  from physics of glasses and from resource allocation problems and epidemic modelling.
